1. Glen Alton
Located 13 miles up State Rte. 635 (Big Stony Creek Rd.), Glen Alton was a working farm up until the 1980s. It features a unique part known as the wetlands, besides the gorgeous old farmhouse, outbuildings, and ponds. Visitors can go for a walk in the woods and enjoy the surroundings.
2. New River
The New River is an American Heritage River being the ”second oldest river in the world.” It runs 37 miles long through scenic Giles County in Southwest Virginia. This river is also one of the major economic drivers in Giles County by serving as a gateway to varied recreational opportunities.
Visitors can experience unforgettable outdoor activities including fishing for smallies and muskies with experienced guides, multi-day paddle expeditions on the river, sleeping out under the stars, or enjoying varied off-river fun and accommodations.
3. Mountain Lake Conservancy
Mountain Lake is a freshwater lake in Giles County near Newport. It is one of the only two natural lakes in Virginia. In the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Drummond is the other.

4. Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine, passes through Giles County. It allows visitors to hike portions of it while taking in the county’s natural beauty. 5. Dismal Falls
Dismal Falls is a 0.2-kilometer out-and-back trail with a waterfall located near Pearisburg, VA. The trail is excellent for hikers, walkers, and nature enthusiasts of all skill levels. The falls boost the attraction to people because of its unique features.
