Planning Your Weekend

Regarding accommodations, the Virginia Mountain Playground has something for everyone. Choose from cozy cabins, scenic campsites, and comfortable hotels to suit every budget. The best time to visit depends on your preferred activities. Summer is ideal for water sports and hiking, while fall offers stunning foliage. Winter is excellent for skiing and snowboarding, and spring boasts blooming landscapes and mild weather.

Day 1: Explore Nature

Start your adventure at New River Trail State Park. This 57-mile trail follows an old railroad and is excellent for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. It’s mostly flat, making it perfect for families. Bring a picnic basket to enjoy by the river. Then, head to Foster Falls, an excellent spot for fishing, kayaking, or simply soaking in the beauty.

Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the afternoon. It is known as “America’s Favorite Drive.” This scenic road winds through the mountains, offering breathtaking views. Numerous overlooks provide fantastic photo opportunities. Don’t miss Mabry Mill, one of the most photographed spots on the parkway.

Day 2: Dive into History and Culture

Begin your second day at Shot Tower Historical State Park. It dates back to the early 1800s and was for making ammunition. Enjoy a guided tour to learn about its history and take in the views from the top. Next, visit Wytheville, a charming town rich in history. Check out the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum. She was the wife of President Woodrow Wilson, and the town was her birthplace. Stroll down Main Street to explore local boutiques and cafes.

In the afternoon, head to the Wolf Creek Indian Village and Museum. This replica of a Native American village offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Participate in hands-on activities and learn about the culture and history of the Native Americans who once lived there.

Day 3 (Relax and Unwind)

On your final day, visit one of the local wineries or breweries. Try the West Wind Farm Vineyard and Winery or sample craft beer at Seven Sisters Brewery. Enjoy the beautiful mountain views as you sip your drink. If you prefer a more active day, play golf at Draper Valley Golf Club. The course offers a scenic setting for a day of golf.

End your weekend with a meal at a local restaurant. Many places offer delicious farm-to-table meals that highlight the best local produce.

Virginia’s Mountain Playground offers activities for all interests. Hike scenic trails, explore historical sites, or relax with a glass of local wine. Plan your trip and enjoy a memorable weekend escape!
