1. Virginia Tech Football
Virginia Tech Football is the heart and soul of Hokie Nation, and game days in Blacksburg are just a blast! Tailgating is a huge deal here—it’s a fun tradition that brings everyone together to root for the Hokies. As a college football team, they play at the NCAA Division I level in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Even though many youth and amateur leagues exist in the NRV, Virginia Tech football sets the vibe for the local sports scene!
2. Pulaski River Turtles
The Pulaski River Turtles are a pro baseball team from Pulaski, playing in the Appalachian League. It is a summer league linked to Major League Baseball (MLB). They kicked things off in 2014 when the league expanded. The River Turtles have been great competitors, snagging multiple championships and showcasing some serious college talent. Many of these players eventually make it to the MLB! Their home games are at the historic Motor Mile Field at Calfee Park. It is a great place for fans to enjoy a lively atmosphere with plenty of food, drinks, and merch.
3. Radford Highlanders
The Radford Highlanders are the sports teams from Radford University. These teams have been killing it in many different sports lately, especially with the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The soccer squads also hold their own in the conference. They also have solid performances in baseball, softball, volleyball, and tennis. In the 2018-2019 season, the Highlanders snagged some Big South Tournament Championships. It was in women’s soccer, women’s basketball, and men’s tennis.
4. New River United
New River United is a semi-pro soccer team. They’ve been part of the local soccer scene since 1993 and play in the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA). With over 1,500 members, it’s all about giving players of all ages and skill levels a chance to shine. The team is connected to the community and focuses on helping players develop their skills.
