Summer is around the corner, and so is the 4th of July! Celebrate the day of our country’s Independence with your family, whether in the backyard or on crowded streets, watching fireworks displays throughout the evening. The New River Valley is an exciting place to be in the summer, and you could enjoy various attractions during independence day. Here are some events you shouldn’t miss celebrating the 4th of July in the NRV.
From Blacksburg to Christiansburg and Floyd, every city in the New River Valley has its fireworks show that you shouldn’t miss if you’re in the area. Grab your lawn chair or blanket, grab a spot with a great view, and enjoy the show! There is no entry fee, and everyone can enjoy the show from the comfort of their own picnic space.
Several festivals and celebrations are hosted all over the city streets. Magnificent live music performances are held at the Main Street of Christiansburg from 10 AM to 4 PM. Parades will also occur in Pulaski at 11 AM and Newport around the same time. After the parade, Newport will host their annual duck race in Sinking Creek at Newport Park, and there will be one for children and one for adults.
Honoring the country’s Independence, Dublin Park will host a flag ceremony, complete with a POW/MIA Missing Man Ceremony and an honorary 50-gun salute. In Blacksburg, people could witness a reenactment of the Revolutionary Wars, listen to a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and a tour around the historic Smithfield Plantation home.
The 4th of July doesn’t have to be bombastic, so long as you’re with your beloved family and close friends. You could enjoy a picnic in your backyard, barbequing hotdogs on the grill. You could invite everyone to go boating on the New River near Bissett Park or cheer for the Pulaski River Turtles in a baseball game right at Calfee Park.
The 4th of July is a monumental holiday that we observe in honor of our country’s Independence. NRV invites you to celebrate with us as we raise a glass of freedom! Big or small, indulge the whole family and close friends in this celebration.
